nothing more, nothing less

In case any of you were unaware, I have a Bosnian family.

It started when I got my job with Intelcom and FedEx. The first day I was in the office, this polite foreign man came up to me and asked me “how are you princess?”

From that moment on, we were very close. Like father and daughter. Not a day passed that we never asked how each other was, or have a break together to share some gossip or make jokes. Salko made sure that I was always taken care of; he was the first and last person I’d see for each work day.

As work progressed, and tension came between my boss and I, Salko immediately had his guard up. Right up to the night he was informed he had to let me know I was let go, or his job would be in jeopardy. Halida and Salko wiped the tears from my face and promised to keep in touch.

Now I see this family (we’ve kind of adopted each other.) about every other week. With doctor visits and my anxiety at an all-time high, I haven’t been able to see much of them. Tonight, once again my guardian angel Salko gave me a call to ask how I was. We talked for about half an hour, then we said goodbye. Not before he said “You’re not alone, sweetheart.”

I am very thankful to have these people in my life, especially here in Fort McMurray where I’ve come to find myself lost and always struggling to find some comfort. These two wonderful people are my angels, my friends and my family.

(I think everything about them is beautiful, along with our friendship so I decided it should be shared.)
